DISMARC - discovering music archives

Music archives are home to a treasure trove of audio. And the contents are not only music - videos, books, documents, manuscripts and musical instruments are all part of Europe's cultural heritage. Partners will provide copies of their metadata to be made available via the DISMARC website, and all data will be searchable from one point of access.

European Commission on Preservation and Access ECPA

The European Commission on Preservation and Access ECPA was established in 1994 to promote activities aimed at keeping collections in European archives and libraries accessible over time. Books, documents, photographs, films, tapes and disks are all subject to decay. The digital revolution has introduced new problems of obsolescence of soft- and hardware. In order to keep our documentary heritage available for future generations of users, large-scale programmes must be developed for its preservation. The ECPA aims to raise public awareness of this issue and to impress the urgency of the situation on policy makers, funding agents, and users. The ECPA acts as a European platform for discussion and cooperation of heritage organizations in areas of preservation and access.

PACKED - Platform for Archiving and Preservation of Art on Electronic and Digital Media

PACKED generates, collects and distributes knowledge about the preservation and conservation of media art. How can we safeguard this heritage for future generations? How is this practically handled and what could be the role of the artist in these processes? Are there any international descriptive standards or juridical guidelines?
PACKED tries to answer these questions and addresses thereby the different steps in the preservation process. These works of media art, variable, hybrid and ephemeral by nature, are highly dependent on time-based technology. The very practice of conservation requires in many cases practical knowledge of technological devices, next to deontological considerations on what to preserve, or how the intention, context and experience of a media artwork can be registered and interpreted over an indefinite period of time.

Video Active - Creating access to Europe's television heritage

The aim of Video Active was to create access to television archives across Europe. The unlocking of these (largely) closed archives should make their content freely available for educational and academic purposes, on a large-scale international basis, enabling an interactive discovery of television’s cultural heritage.
The project Video Active - funded by the eContentPlus programme (2005-2008) of the European Commission - has finished at the end of August 2009. The portal contains over 10.000 items: videos, photographs and articles. The history of European television can be discovered through multiple themes. Each of these themes has it’s own showcase, highlighting parts of the collection with additional context information. Various search modes can be applied. The portal will continue to be online.
